Ian Tippey from the National Space Academy (www.nationalspaceacademy.org) worked with Class 3 this morning to carry out an experiment to explain why space rockets are white.
They found that white reflects the temperature which prevents the fuel from catching fire and exploding. Painting a rocket black would mean that heat would be absorbed which could cause an explosion.
The children used special paint, hair dryers and heat lamps to help them with their experiment.
To finish off the morning Ian showed a ‘whoosh bottle’, which is a small scale simulation of how rockets are launched into space.
A fantastic morning was had by all!
