Early Reading
At Ramshaw Primary School supporting the children to learn to read begins in Reception. We begin with Phonemic Awareness and move into using Sounds Write a synthetic phonic programme. We initially introduce picture books to children to share with staff and parents.
This progresses to teaching the skills of segmenting, blending and manipulating sounds. The children become able to use these skills to read words and are given decodable books to read that include the sounds that have been taught.
Our aim is that children become fluent and confident readers. In addition to this we teach early comprehension skills and develop the children’s understanding of vocabulary through exposure of rich vocabulary and new or unfamiliar words.
Accelerated Reader
Ramshaw Primary School uses Accelerated reader, which is a computer reading program, that provides books and magazines for students to read, along with quizzes that match the reading material. The program is designed to motivate students to read, while allowing teachers to track student reading progress.
